Continuation of the story on the history of the 12th African Hunter Regiment.This last French tank regiment of the Vichy Regime was sent to North Africa, in prevention of an Anglo-Saxon attack, as was the case in 1940 in Dakar (defeated by the Vichy National Navy).It is for this reason, and also in order to move away from the controllers of the armistice commission (Italian and German agents ensuring the application of the clauses of the armistice of 1940), that the 12th RCA leaves their base, from La Jonquière (Morocco) to Senegal.The men embark in Casablanca aboard the ship "Montesquieu" on June 8, 1941, (Shot 1) to disembark eight days later in Dakar, Senegal.However, the PC moved to Thiès, 80km from Dakar. The chasseurs d'Afrique were taken there using a small bush train from July 19, 1941. Their camp "La Tropical" is installed in a former gendarmerie cantonment (Shot 2).The garrison of Thiès included the R.M.I.C./A.O.F., The 1ère Compagnie Portée de Mauritanie and an air base, then soon after, the 13th and 14th batteries of the 6th Colonial Artillery Regiment. This garrison, scalded by the British attack on Dakar, was to serve as a point of defense against a possible new attack by British troops from neighboring Gambia.In order to be able to give this group an independent administrative management, on September 1, 1941, this Squadron Group was renamed: "12ème Groupe Autonome de Chasseurs d'Afrique" (12ème G.A.C.A.).It is therefore only then that we can truly speak of the 12ème RCA.This led to a significant increase in its strength and equipment, an addition of 6 officers, 10 non-commissioned officers and 51 hunters from the 1st R.C.A. The midnight mass was then celebrated in meditation. The altar had been arranged behind the same tank hangar and surrounded on either side by two Somua. (Shot 5)After 18 months spent in Senegal, on the evening of January 6, 1943, the 12th G.A.C.A. finally received the order to move from General Giraud, Commander-in-Chief of the French Forces in Africa, recently escaped from his prison at Kaiserslautern in Germany, and who had just arrived in Algiers: "It is not conceivable that we wait longer to bring in the last Tank Squadron of the French Empire.
